Facing an unplanned pregnancy can be overwhelming. Our caring and professional staff can help you sort out your thoughts and feelings, link you with resources and walk with you through this difficult journey.
About you. Many women and their partners find themselves facing the thought of bringing life into the world, knowing that they are not in the position at this time in their lives to provide their child with the stable environment that their child needs and deserves. Situations like age, lack of resources such as housing, adequate employment, financial resources, a support network, struggles with substance abuse or perhaps a pregnancy due to sexual assault all bring women to the table to evaluate what is in the best interest of their child.
About your child. Despite what your unique circumstances are, we know one thing to be true for all birthparents. They love their children, they will never forget them and adoption planning is always made with the best interest of the child in mind.
About birthfathers. In about 40% of adoption plans made through CHSFS, birthfathers are involved. We at Children's Home Society & Family Services feel the birthfather is an important and valued person in the life of a child and in the planning around the best interests of the child. We realize, though, that it may not always be possible or appropriate for the birthfather to be involved. Perhaps you are no longer seeing the birthfather or may not be on good terms with him. He may not even be aware of your pregnancy. Talk openly with your counselor about your specific situation.
We ask that all birthparents consult an adoption attorney to talk specifically about how the laws in Minnesota relate to your specific situation. For more information, contact the Academy of Adoption Attorneys. There is no fee for this service.
If you would like to learn more about open adoption, view our video/DVD Open Adoption: Many Faces, One Heart which candidly explores the unique relationships formed by birthparents and adoptive parents working together on behalf of the child.
