Who are the Kids?

Minnesota's waiting children are in the foster care system throughout the State of Minnesota. County social service agencies and the courts have determined that the families into which these children were born are unable to care for them.  Parental rights have been terminated, placing the children under state guardianship.  Children in this program can be between the ages of newborn to 18 years old; however, most are over the age of six.  Many are also members of a sibling group or have significant special needs. Of the more than 690 children who need homes immediately:

  • slightly less than 300 have a diagnosis of a physical or medical disability
  • more than 400 are a member of a sibling group and need to be adopted in a family together
  • almost 400 are children of color
  • more than 500 are over five years of age.
