| We would be happy to assist you with your search to find birth parents or birth children if your adoption was done through Children's Home Society & Family Services (formerly Children's Home Society of Minnesota). In order to request a search, you must be a birthmother, legal birthfather, adoptive parent, an adopted person who is at least 19 years old, or have written permission from one of the above persons.
Search Services A variety of methods is used to confidentially and respectfully search for a birth family member. Prior to the search, our social worker will speak with you in detail so that you understand the range of possible outcomes that may result from the search and can enter the process with realistic expectations.
Outreach/Intermediary Services Once a party is found, your social worker will act as an intermediary between you and the other party. Intermediary services offer clients professional and confidential exchanges of information among members of the adoption triad (adopted persons, adoptive parents and birth parent). This service protects the privacy of all parties involved, unless the parties choose to waive their privacy. Intermediary services include providing updated information for the file, exchanges of information, photographs, gifts, or phone calls through the intermediary, and requests for direct, identifying contact with a genetic relative. Intermediary services are mandated by legislation passed in Minnesota in 1977, 1982, and 1987. Pre-and post-intermediary counseling are important components of this service.
