| You are not alone. For some women, learning about a pregnancy can be very stressful. You may be in shock or not sure how this can be happening. It's not unusual for you to want to put off thinking about this. Some women have a difficult time eating, sleeping or concentrating. You may feel "frozen", not sure what to do next.
Get support. Take a deep breath; know that you are not alone. The best way to walk through this is with support. Talking with your family, your partner, a friend or even a pregnancy counselor is a first step to facing the situation and working on a plan that is in your and your baby's best interest.
You may be wondering what your options are. You may have questions about whether or not you are ready to parent. If you would like to meet with one of our counselors, click here.
Connect with a mentor. We can arrange for birthparents to be connected to a young woman who has experienced her own unplanned pregnancy and adoption plan. Our mentors are trained volunteers who want to give back to others experiencing a difficult time and are just there to listen, support and share their experience. We also have a similar program where we refer single parents to other experienced single parents for support. To connect with a mentor, please contact one of our counselors.
Get legal help. We ask that all birthparents consult an adoption attorney to talk specifically about how the laws in Minnesota relate to your specific situation. We recommend that you talk with an attorney who understands all the aspects of adoption law. For more information contact the Academy of Adoption Attorneys. There is no fee for this service.
Take care of your health. It is important to see a doctor and to set up regular prenatal care. Eating healthy foods, refraining from drugs, alcohol and cigarettes will ensure your baby gets a healthy start to his/her development.
Get health insurance assistance. If you do not have health insurance you can apply for Medical Assistance from your county Human Services Department, which will cover your prenatal care and labor/and delivery costs. To find out more click here. They can also tell you about other resources available to you such as WIC (Women Infant & Children), a nutrition program. To find a WIC clinic near you call 800-942-4030.
