Pathways to Children - Ethiopia 2006
Our last Pathways trip took volunteers to Ethiopia in September 2006.
This hands-on adventure to Ethiopia provided volunteers a rewarding opportunity to spend time assisting in the care of infants and children. They helped deliver much-needed items, such as clothing, blankets and age-appropriate child development toys. And they also played an invaluable role in helping Ethiopian children to thrive.
Some destination highlights included:
Addis Ababa — Ethiopia’s capital city, known for its fragrant eucalyptus forests, and site of CHSFS-run foster care centers, opened in November 2002. Volunteers had an opportunity to assist in the care and developmental coaching of the 40 – 55 children (ages infant – 6) who live in these facilities while awaiting permanent placement with an adoptive family.
Lalibela — Site of 13 rock-hewn churches, carved with saints and other mystical symbols, built in the 12th century. Considered the Eighth Wonder of the World. (optional - not tax deductible)
Hossana — Site of CHSFS’ child-receiving center in the Ethiopian highlands, about 150 miles southeast of Addis Ababa. Orphaned children from the area are brought here and then taken to the Addis Ababa care centers.
