Urban Mission Development for Street Children in Antananarivo

In partnership with 67 Hectars Lutheran Church, this program currently provides various services for 60 street children ages 7 through 14 in the 67 hectars region of Antananarivo. The goal is to expand the program to serve 100 students each year. The following is a description of the various services provided for the children and their families.

The education program provides instruction in reading, writing, mathematics and French - the basic curriculum in the public schools. In addition, students participate in recreational activities such as sports, arts and crafts. The purpose of the education program is to prepare the children to pass entry exams so they can be admitted to local public schools.

Since the children of AMTD (Asa Misiona An - Tanan - Dehibe) come from families who are homeless or squatters on the streets of 67 hectars, access to regular personal hygiene is limited or non-existent. This program provides the children with personal hygiene maintenance by bathing, washing and grooming the children’s hair every Saturday. Medical services are also provided on a weekly basis, or as needed, through volunteer doctors and nurses.

The children are provided with three meals a day, to ensure that they are able to learn effectively, concentrate on their schoolwork and participate in recreational activities. Clothing is also available as needed.

In addition to the specific services for the children, the parents also receive education and other forms of support. This project provides weekly adult literacy programs held on Saturdays that includes teaching technical skills and civic engagement. Free food distribution also takes place on Saturdays.
