An estimated 600,000 to one million children reside in orphanages in Russia and not all of them are “adoptable” for various reasons. Because of this, many children in Russia will grow up in an orphanage.
CHSFS took on a project to make improvements for some of those children, in an orphanage in the Village of Korsakovo, in the far eastern region of Khabarovsk, Russia. The project was made possible in part by a grant from The Leuthold Foundation. The aim of the project was to construct a workshop at the Children’s Home where boys could learn how to use tools and machines for construction in wood and  | | Boys with bed they built |
metal. This will give them some practical, marketable skills that they can take with them when they leave the Home, at age 17-18.
This project came on the heels of a similar project in which a room in the orphanage was remodeled and equipped for the purpose of creating a vocational module for young women to learn sewing and tailoring trades. Because this project was so successful, the Department of Education in Khabarovsk requested a counterpart for the boys. The project went through, as you can see from the pictures, and now the boys of the Children’s Home in Korsakovo have their workshop!
