| CHSFS is a non profit child welfare agency licensed to do adoption studies in the states of Minnesota, Iowa, Western Wisconsin, Washington, D.C., Maryland and counties in Northern Virginia or Richmond and to place children through our intercountry adoption programs in all 50 states and to US citizens living abroad. CHSFS has full accreditation from the Council on Accreditation and is a member in good standing of the Joint Council of International Children’s Services, the National Council on Adoption, and the Child Welfare League of America.
We have been doing adoptions since 1889 when the orphan trains brought children cross country to find families. We are presently among the four largest agencies in the country. To date, we have placed over 23,000 children. We have been working in international adoption since the Korean War.
CHSFS is involved in international humanitarian aid to all countries where we work. In the last five years we have funded over$2 million in aid to 12 countries to help children who will never get adopted because of their age, medical conditions or because they will eventually be able to return to their birth families.
CHSFS works with over 100 partner agencies throughout the US and in Europe to offer international adoption programs. Thus these local agencies do not have to duplicate the tasks of setting up and maintaining their own international programs. These agencies give CHSFS and our international partners the assurance that families are well served and well prepared for their adoptions.
At CHSFS we believe that all children deserve a place where they can experience dignity and respect. Our mission statement includes a strong dedication to finding families, love, and care for children with special needs.
CHSFS strongly accents parent preparation for adoption, knowing that parents who are well prepared to bring a child of another culture into their home will help that child and their own family in this lifelong process of adoption. We offer up to 25 hours of classes on site and through our preparation course With Eyes Wide Open.
CHSFS has a large post adoption program to help children and parents through the many important years after the adoption placement. Locally, there are classes, support groups, counseling, workshops and events. Nationwide, post adoption offers help by phone, references, homeland tours and search services in the country of the adoption.
