New Generation Project (Sponsorship Project- Learn more. Register NOW!) The New Generation Project will commence in 2009 as the next step in supporting vulnerable women and children in this remote area of southern India. The first initiative will be to establish a pilot project to equip, train and finance women to operate goat rearing businesses. The goal is that these women will become self-sufficient and can support the needs of their families. The New Generation Project will also provide tutoring in the villages to equip and encourage young people to successfully stay in school. Without an education there is little hope of breaking the cycle of poverty for these families. Funding needs for the New Generation Project total $30,000.
Foster Family Village (Sponsorship Project- Learn more. Register NOW!) CHSFS is partnering with Madras Social Service Guild (MASOS) to develop and successfully establish the first integrated family-based foster care program including single mothers trained as foster parents. The site for this innovative child welfare project is the MASOS campus, located outside of Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu. On June 28, 2008 the first three homes were opened and are now occupied. CHSFS is currently seeking additional funding for the construction of seven additional homes and to establish small businesses that will contribute revenues to support the ongoing operation of the Foster Family Village. Funds needed include: Construction of seven new homes - $50,000; Building Materials Center - $23,000; Weaver's Guild and Batik Art Center - $21,000
Orphanage Construction Project CHSFS is partnering with Sishu Kshema Bhavan (SKB) to establish a new child care center in the state of Kerala. Many vulnerable children to be cared for at the new center are currently institutionalized elsewhere in Kerala and receiving little or no quality education and child care due to a severe lack of financial support. This facility is scheduled for completion by spring 2009. Up to 50 orphaned and abandoned children will receive quality care, love and education. They will get a second chance at childhood and quite possibly adoption as a result of this exciting project. Construction costs are estimated to be $300,000 and we are in need of approximately $50,000 more to fully fund this project.
Spring of Desert CHSFS is partnering with an international Korean organization to provide educational services for children who otherwise are not attending any primary schooling. Located in Pune and Solapur, this organization offers an evening and weekend school for children that come from poor families living in slum neighborhoods. These children otherwise forego school to help with household needs and other less child appropriate tasks such as hawking basic consumer goods in the street. Ongoing support is needed as the enrollment is sharply on the rise. Our goal is to raise $5,000 per year to support general operations as well as $38,000 to construct a new school building in Solapur.
Female Infanticide Prevention Project (FIPP) Because female infanticide, the deliberate killing of unborn or newborn girls, is a practice still prevalent in India, CHSFS is collaborating with Madras Social Service Guild (MASOS) in Tamil Nadu to educate the community at large as to the long-term social consequences of gender inequity. Part of this educational campaign is to change community attitudes, norms and behaviors related to gender preferences and imbalances. Our goal is to raise ongoing funds to support this important work.
