| With your help, we support families who need basic survival necessities. Our program in Guatemala City helps birth families whose babies have been adopted. These birth families often have crises and need medical care, food and housing money to tide them over.
Guatemala is a country with many children in need of help, and has one of the highest rates of intercountry adoption in the Southern Hemisphere. In Guatemala adoptions are often referred to as "big business" because so many infants leave the country with adoptive parents.
We are mindful of the children who are in need and may never get adopted. We support an orphanage for 40 older children in Puerto Barrios on the North Coast. Most of these children will never have a permanent family through adoption. We help pay the salaries of the caretakers, and enable older children to participate in vocational and technical training so they have practical job skills when they leave the home. Also, volunteer work groups go to the orphanage and we send shipments of goods periodically.
