Explore your options. We encourage you to learn about the children in foster care who need families, talk to people who have adopted, read books and articles about adoption, search the internet for information.
Attend an information meeting. The adoption process begins with your attendance at an information meeting where you will learn about:
- The school-age children waiting for families in Minnesota
- The process and procedures involved in adoption
- The education and training provided to adoptive families
View our Informational Meeting Schedule and register to attend online.
Register to begin the adoption process. After you have attended an information meeting, please complete the paper registration form. Once we receive your registration form, you will receive application materials and/or a schedule of upcoming Adoption Education Classes in the mail. You will complete written information about yourselves and meet individually with a social worker who will write your Adoption Home Study. Once this document is completed, you and your social worker will work together and begin the "matching process". In this process you will explore the needs of a child or children in the foster care system. After placement, there is continued contact between your social worker and your family until finalization and beyond.
