Mei's Story
"Gotcha Day" by Maren Longbella

We didn't know what to expect, but then we hadn't known what to expect since the day our adoption journey began on bicycles headed to an orientation meeting at the local library. About two years of paperwork, homestudies, workshops, interviews and one long plane trip to China later, we were about to meet our daughter. We had seen her picture and had a description too. She liked music, especially happy music, and she was brusque. Brusque? She got more inter ... And then they arrived. The elevator dinged to a stop. The doors opened and 11 caregivers with 11 babies walked off and down the hall. We looked at each other. We could barely stand the few seconds it took to organize handing over the babies. My husband and I were the first called. And suddenly, there she was, our daughter. She allowed me to hold her. She and I looked at each other, too stunned to cry, while all around us the couples were getting their babies. Some parents cried; some babies cried. Our daughter simply fill asleep, snuggled in her new pink blanket.

XuXu's Story
DISCOVERING PERFECTION IN AN IMPERFECT WORLD, by XuXu's Father

CHOICE

The early phases of the adoption process can feel quite overwhelming. There is a mountain of paperwork and forms to sort through, applications to fill out and homework to complete. Very quickly, the process begins to take on a surreal, abstract quality. So how does one find perfection in an imperfect world? For me, I think it meant challenging my ideas of what perfection was. What I found was that our daughter was perfect for us. Tian Xu perfectly completes our family. She came to us as a loving, bright, intelligent and beautiful little girl. From the moment I met her, any concerns about her special needs melted away. She was even more beautiful in person than in pictures, and her “permanent wink” even had an enduring impish ...
