| The private adoption agencies ("programs"), under direction of the Colombian government, follow established general requirements for adoption. Generally, married couples who are first time parents and 25-38 years of age, may adopt children between 0 - 2 years old. The age requirement takes effect when your application is accepted by the program in Colombia; therefore if you are close to the upper age and want to adopt an infant, it is not wise to get on a long waiting list.
The waiting time varies with each Colombian adoption house and ICBF. Singles and couples up to age 55 may adopt children age 7-15 through the government ICBF program and sometimes from the private agencies. Most programs require couples to be married at least three years and some as many as five years. In the case of children who wait because of age, known medical conditions, or are part of a large sibling group, most requirements for adoption may be waived. Colombia will not allow the adoption of a child by a gay or lesbian person.
We are currently taking applications from families open to older children, sibling groups, and children with special needs, or applications for infants from Colombian-American families only.
