| You may be dealing with some of the same fears and concerns as the birthmother. You have entered a new phase in your life, one of bringing a life into this world. So what can you do? If you and the birthmother are still together, you can meet together or separately with a pregnancy counselor to talk about both the option of parenting as well as adoption planning.
Birthfathers do have the right and the responsibility to take part in all decision making regarding adoption planning. In Minnesota, birthfathers have several options. If you are interested in being notified of an adoption plan you should register with the Fathers Adoption Registry. You may register any time during the 9 months of pregnancy and up until 30 days after the birth of the child. You would then be notified if an adoption plan was being made. After notice, you can file for paternity and seek to parent, you can participate in adoption planning, or you can do nothing.
Many children grow up wondering who their birthfather is and never have the chance to find out. Without you, they only know half of their history. You can remove these questions from your child's mind by being a part of the planning for your child's future.
