Frequently Asked Question #7
We do not require you to travel with anyone.  However, past participants have shown us that adopted persons get more out of the trip and feel a greater sense of fulfillment from the experience if they are able to travel with a family member or a close friend who could provide support and encouragement.  The more emotional activities on the tour are the orphanage visit, the Korean adoption agency visit, and the visit to the birthmothers' home for a discussion.  But the entire trip, for many adopted persons, is the first time to return to their country of birth.  Just absorbing and participating in the culture and for many, being a part of the "ethnic majority" for the first time, can be an amazing and awesome experience.  The need, we have found, is not only for comfort and support, but the need is also for a family member or close friend to share in new discovery, recognize and be part of the new information that is accessed in Korea.  Travelling with a family member or close friend is also extremely helpful upon returning to the United States.  It is at this time that the "processing" of the trip happens and it is nice for the adopted person to be able to talk to someone who shared the experience.
